Cluster: Beamed radio emission from Earth
A recent study reveals how the most powerful emission of terrestrial origin, the Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), is beamed into space. This result was obtained using data collected by the four satellites of the Cluster mission. These new data were found to be inconsistent with two leading AKR beaming theories developed 30 years ago, but support a more recent one. The result has important implications for radio studies of planetary magnetospheres, including radio searches for exo-planets.

Herschel: Herschel Acoustic and Vibration Tests
The Herschel spacecraft is currently undergoing a series of mechanical tests at the ESTEC test facilities. These will verify the Herschel spacecraft compliance with specification requirements, ensuring that the flight model is ready for launch. The system level tests are being continued by the vibration tests, performed at the end of last week and the full length of this week.

Director's Desk: Call for White Papers for Exo-Planet Roadmap Advisory Team
ESA has convened an expert body, the Exo-Planet Roadmap Advisory Team, with a mandate to recommend to the agency a roadmap leading to the long term goal of detecting biomarkers in Earth-like exo-planets in the habitable zone, and imaging such planets. The EPR-AT will consult with the broad scientific community in order to solicit input for their report to ESA. The Call for White Papers, issued today, is the first step in this consultation process. The deadline for receipt of the White Papers is 12:00 hours (noon) CEST on 30 July 2008.

Hubble: Far Away: Light in the Young Universe at Redshift beyond Three [Sun, 06 Jul 2008 22:00:00 UT]
The meeting will discuss the most recent observations in the redshift range z>3, and state-of-the-art models and numerical simulations. The following topics are covered: The 21cm line during reionization Scenarios for reionization First stars and high-z quasars Star formation history in the early Universe Absorption signatures by the IGM GRBs as tracers of the remote Universe The role of feedback and environment The goal of the conference is to bring together scientists working in this domain, to refine the predictions of models, and confront them with the growing body of observations concerning this early epoch.
